1900s
The foundations of innovation
The story begins with John W. Duntley’s vision to bring tools to market that did not yet exist. Incorporated in 1901, Chicago Pneumatic patented its first single-valve pneumatic hammer, setting the foundation for a brand built on practical innovation and engineering ingenuity.
1910s
Simplifying performance
The introduction of the simplest valve marked a major breakthrough, quickly adopted across the compressor industry. This decade reinforced Chicago Pneumatic’s role as a technical reference, improving control, speed and capacity in compressed air applications.
Chicago Pneumatic engines powered early motor racing across Europe, while rotary oil-well drilling equipment expanded the brand’s reach into demanding industrial applications. Performance was no longer theoretical.

A tool that changed industries
In 1939, Chicago Pneumatic designed and manufactured the world’s first impact wrench, in both pneumatic and electric versions. This milestone redefined efficiency in assembly, maintenance and construction work worldwide.
1940s
Performance with purpose
During the war years, Chicago Pneumatic responded to urgent manufacturing needs with the hot dimpling machine. In 1943, the CP riveting hammer became a cultural icon through Rosie the Riveter, symbolising strength, capability and industrial pride.
As oil exploration intensified, Chicago Pneumatic drill bits broke depth records approaching 20,000 feet. 1950s cemented the brand’s reputation for durability and performance.

From earth to space
Chicago Pneumatic technology contributed to the Apollo 8 missions, the first mission with humans orbiting around the moon. In 1969, an electric motor powered a critical pump that stabilised the Apollo capsule after splashdown: a proof of how reliability matters even beyond our planet.
1970s
Expanding into automotive
Speed ratchets were already trusted by automotive manufacturers. The 1970s marked the introduction of torque impact wrenches to the automotive market, extending Chicago Pneumatic’s presence across vehicle servicing worldwide.
1980s
A global industrial brand
Joining the Atlas Copco Group in 1987 opened a new chapter. A wave of new industrial products followed, including screwdrivers, assembly tools and ratchet wrenches. The current logo, adopted in 1989, signalled a modern, confident brand.
1990s
Defining the classics
Award-winning campaigns and modular tool design highlighted Chicago Pneumatic’s engineering philosophy. Iconic products earned their own category, “The Classics” celebrating tools that professionals relied on every day.
The inauguration of the Technocenter in Nantes, France, strengthened research and development capabilities. Innovation became more structured, collaborative and focused on real application needs.
